Effective TMJ Disorder Treatment
Jaw pain, clicking, headaches, ear discomfort or difficulty chewing may point to a condition affecting your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). TMJ disorders (TMD) can significantly affect your ability to eat, speak, or even sleep comfortably. With causes ranging from jaw clenching and posture to stress and injury, the right treatment starts with the right diagnosis.
At Bangalow Headache Neck & Jaw Clinic, we offer physiotherapy-led, non-invasive TMJ disorder treatment to help restore movement, reduce pain, and improve daily comfort.
What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jawbone to your skull, playing a key role in speaking, chewing and facial movement, while TMJ disorder (TMD) refers to the dysfunction. The TMJ relies on bones, discs, ligaments, and muscles working in harmony, and TMD affects the joint and surrounding structures.
Affecting up to 12% of people, TMD is more common among women aged 20 to 40 and may be mild or progress to chronic pain and limited function if left untreated. Many people think TMD will go away on its own or that surgery is the only fix, but many cases respond well to targeted physiotherapy.
We understand how frustrating and debilitating TMJ can be, but we can help
TMJ Disorder Symptoms
TMD symptoms can vary widely and affect one or both sides of the face. Common symptoms include:
- Jaw pain, stiffness or locking
- Clicking, popping or limitation when opening or closing the mouth
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Headaches, often in the temples or at the base of the skull
- Earaches, ringing, or blocked ears
- Neck and shoulder pain or tension
- Facial pain, particularly around the cheeks or jawline
- Difficulty chewing or speaking
- Sleep disturbances due to pain or clenching
TMD can significantly affect quality of life, causing chronic discomfort, disrupted sleep, and even anxiety around eating or speaking, making early TMJ disorder physiotherapy essential.
Safe & Fast
All techniques involve targeted, slow and sustained pressure. There is NO manipulation (cracking) of the spine.
Effective
80% of people assessed have treatable and relevant dysfunction. Most of these will see significant changes in the first two weeks.
100% Natural
No drugs, needles, toxic chemicals or side-effects. Just correcting a previously misunderstood fault in biomechanics.
What Causes TMD?
TMJ disorder has multiple causes and may develop due to one clear factor or a combination of issues, including:
- Jaw trauma from falling, sports injuries or accidents can damage the joints or muscles
- Degenerative joint conditions, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
- Teeth grinding or jaw clenching (bruxism)
- Poor posture, especially forward head position
- Dental issues or misaligned bites
- Stress and jaw tension
- Connective tissue disorders
- Genetic predisposition

TMJ Disorder Triggers
Certain actions or habits can worsen symptoms or trigger a flare-up, such as:
- Overusing the jaw (biting into tough foods, gum chewing or nail biting)
- Unconscious clenching or grinding of teeth
- Yawning widely or prolonged dental visits
- Poor sleep posture or working long hours at the desk
- Stress, anxiety or lack of quality sleep
- Understanding your triggers is an important part of treatment planning
- Colder seasons or allergies causing inflammation near the joints
TMJ Disorder Treatments
Our physio for TMJ disorder offers individualised care plans focused on relieving symptoms, restoring function and reducing recurrence.
Physiotherapy
Addressing the root mechanical and muscular causes of TMD, our TMJ disorder physiotherapy uses slow, sustained pressure to improve joint mobility and release tight jaw, neck and head muscles. This treatment is paired with jaw exercises to ensure proper alignment and strengthen the jaw for improved coordination, and postural correction and retraining to reduce joint stress.
Our team is here to help you understand habits contributing to jaw pain and provide strategies to manage symptoms.
Oral Appliances & Splints
Our physiotherapist specialising in bruxism may recommend custom-fitted splints or mouthguards, particularly if you clench or grind your teeth. These devices help offload the joint, reduce muscle strain, and protect your teeth from wear.
In more complex cases, we may work alongside dentists, prosthodontists or orthodontists, ensuring holistic care.
TMJ Disorder Diagnosis
Diagnosis usually starts with a detailed history and physical examination of the jaw. At Bangalow Headache Neck & Jaw Clinic, we assess jaw movement and alignment, muscle tension, posture, and related structures. Imaging such as MRI or CT scans may be used in complex cases to rule out structural damage.
Accurate diagnosis is essential to guide effective treatment for TMJ disorder, especially when symptoms overlap with headaches, bruxism, or neck issues.

Self Help Exercises for your Jaw
Professor Mariano Rocabado’s 6 Exercises for TMJ Disorders
We often incorporate the 6 exercises prescribed by Professor Rocabado, emphasising caring for the head and neck to effectively treat TMJ disorders. Do these exercises six times daily, with six repetitions each time.
- Resting Position of the Joint: Place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth and put gentle pressure on the palate.
- Controlled Opening: Open and close your jaw while gently pressing the tip of the tongue on the roof of the palate.
- Stabilisation of the TMJ: Place two fingers on your chin and open and close your jaw while keeping the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth.
- Stabilised Head Flexion: Lift and lower the chin as if nodding the head.
- Cervical Retraction: Bring your chin toward your neck (creating a double chin), then push it out again.
- Shoulder Retraction: Squeeze the shoulder blades together while lifting and lowering the chest.
